“Golfer’s Elbow? But I don’t play golf?”

This was a conversation a few months back between myself and my doctor. I started having wrist pain back in March after having a few weeks off work, and the instant I got back to my desk – hoo boy. 

We changed up my desk situation and it seemingly got a bit better (perks of being an OH&S rep, you generally have an idea on how to fix not so great posture)  but that was only until my second trip to Melbourne a few months later. When the pain re-started, and ended up to be so bad that I was in tears over the sharp, burning pain within a day of being back on a computer – I knew that the first time wasn’t unfortunately a fluke, something wasn’t quite right.

It wasn’t exactly a long process to diagnose. I didn’t even realise that it was my elbow that was causing the pain. (Like, I know your nerves are connected but to so much in a degree that your wrist goes into a no go zone?)

Golfer’s Elbow is quite like Tennis Elbow – in super easy terms because I seriously don’t know how else to explain it, it’s like a repetitive strain injury of your elbow – generally from funny enough golf, but from other activities (and the probable cause in my case according to my doc) – from typing. Who knew?  There’s a belief there that having a break from doing so much typing on a daily, and then coming straight back into has caused the strain. (I wonder if that’s similar to having six months off the gym and then trying to run at a level 15 uphill treadmill?)  

On the outside, you wouldn’t even be able to tell anything was wrong, apart from when I’ve been on the computer for too long throughout the day, or the wind goes in a different direction, or my coffee goes down a certain degree (aka, at any random point in time) – and my face goes from super YAY! to super OW.

It’s still being treated and looked at for the moment, so watch this space for updates, but it’s also a super clear reminder that people are out there fighting their own battles, and you may never know. Don’t judge people for maybe looking like they’re taking things a bit too easy –  what they’re doing might be the actual best of their ability for that point in time.  Encourage your tribe and those outside of it to be the best them, no matter what.
